New Outdoor Performance, Outdoor Theatre Retreat a Success and Lupinder's Tent visits school

It has been a busy spring and summer so far at Gale Force Theatre! In early May we hosted our second Outdoor Theatre Retreat at the Deanery Project and in April we brought Lupinder’s Tent to Admiral Westphal Elementary School in Dartmouth. But first, we have a new show happening this summer…

Icarus, Falling of Birds

Poster by Laura K. Watson

Icarus, Falling of Birds is an experience of poetry on an epic scale. In September of 2013, thousands of migratory songbirds perished after being lured like moths to a flame to a hundred-foot-high flare at the Canaport Liquefied Natural Gas plant in Saint John, New Brunswick. This unique outdoor performance, adapted from the book of poetry and photography of the same name by Harry Thurston and Thaddeus Holownia, features a reading by the poet, large-scale puppetry by North Barn Theatre, a string trio composed by Blue Lobelia, and a youth ensemble of performers. As an audience member, you'll walk from scene to scene, taking in each striking element of this performance situated in the landscape where these same birds may have made their homes.

Second Outdoor Theatre Retreat at the Deanery

2025 Outdoor Theatre Retreat Cohort at the Deanery Project

Over the first weekend in May we welcomed a cohort of pre-teens and teens to the Deanery Project on the beautiful Eastern Shore for our second annual Outdoor Theatre Retreat. With a group of 15 youth participants we created an original outdoor play about the Dawn Chorus and the return of the migratory birds. We played improve games, painted, glued and sewed costumes, sang songs, walked in the forest and ate beautifully prepared meals. Thanks to the Deanery Project for having us once again and to the Adventure Earth Centre for making this opportunity possible.

Mr Mud, Barachois and Swampy ready for some major fun!

Lupinder’s Tent Visits Admiral Westphal Elementary

Back in April Lupinder and Ms Grismunda set up their Lost and Found tent in the library of Admiral Westphal Elementary. They had heard that there were some very keen and bright students that might help Lupinder and Ms Grismunda reunite lost objects with those that seek them most, and boy were they right! A librarian was reunited with her beloved wee pug, a forgetful cook had his apron returned and many unexpected visitors dropped by for tea. Lupinder and Ms Grismunda had such a good time that they are planning a school library tour in the fall, stay tuned for locations!

A big thanks to Halifax Regional Arts, drama specialist Sarah, librarian Annik and child and youth care practitioner Erik for having Lupinder’s Tent!
